In this article, I share a list of zero-waste stores in Switzerland that we like to visit. We have been on a zero-waste journey for 3 years now. In the beginning, we would visit a bulk store every week because we didn’t how much we needed to buy. But with practice, we got more organized and now we go to a bulk store once a month.
What do we get there? Everything that would be packaged in plastic in a grocery store (nuts, dry fruits, some cheese, pulses, polenta flour, etc.) or foods that are not available in a regular grocery store. Every few months we refill our laundry detergent in a bulk store. I like that I can get ingredients that I use to make natural cleaning products at home: sodium bicarbonate, cleaning vinegar, Marseille soap, beeswax, and citric acid.
As we live in the countryside, there are several farms in our area which make it easier to get seasonal fruits and vegetables. To be fully transparent, we still buy tropical fruits which is something we should not be doing. But we love bananas, mangoes, and oranges. So it is hard to stop.
There is also a farm closeby where we can buy fresh milk, butter, and free-range eggs from local farmers. We buy meat and poultry from a butcher that works with local and Swiss meat producers.
