What Gives You Credibility? VIP events? Family?

What gives you credibility? I kept asking myself lately as two people (independently) suggested that I should attend events to be more credible for brands. It really annoyed me at first because I don’t agree with that. First, you should not need external validation to feel valuable.  Second, most people go to those events to be seen and promote themselves. As a result, you hardly get to talk to the brand. So what’s the point of going to these events when the only outcome is increased visibility (for the brand)? I’d rather get to know the people behind it. If the brand/PR Agency invites 30 bloggers, it gives you a hint that the quantity is more important than quality.

The best event that I attended was organized by a PR Agency that represents a French chain of cosmetics store. We were three bloggers and had the whole evening to spend with makeup artists and the brand representatives. It worked perfectly because I still use their products, recommend them, and that special night left a beautiful memory.

Another reason why I am selective and critical when it comes to events is that I have a child and a husband. And after a long day at work, I’d rather spend time with them than with strangers. I am going to turn forty this year and need to spend my time smartly. Maybe it is an age thing but I realized that you never know how much time you have left. So instead of chasing credibility and value externally, I invest my time in people who matter. And all that glitz and glamour of VIP events is very conditional. You have to be young, pretty and with interesting numbers on your social media accounts. And that is not something tangible…and as they say, beauty is only skin deep.

What gives you credibility? I can’t wait to read your answers.
