African Designers and Creativity At Afrodyssée

CATEGORY: FASHION

African designers/Afrodyssee

If you are in Geneva next weekend make some time to visit Afrodyssée. It is an event dedicated to promoting  African creativity in the fields of fashion, design and craftsmanship. And not only that. Its aim is to offer deep cultural, culinary and intellectual experience. As such it fits perfectly within the context of the United Nations initiative “Decade for People of African descent 2015-2024“.

The program is rich and enticing. Grand Marché will introduce 50 renown and upcoming African and European designers. There are some African designers and brands that I look forward to meeting such as ownbrown. It is a brand that offers high-quality tights for women of color. Isn’t that just cool? I just hope their stock will not get sold out by the time we arrive.

Fashion show is scheduled for every evening from 8.30 p.m. But if fashion is not your thing, you can visit a photography exhibit. Or participate in various debates and workshops.

If we manage to come early, I would love to participate in a debate on Media and Minorities (on Saturday from 2.15 p.m.) or  Afro-Feminism (Saturday, 5.15 p.m.-6.30p.m.). And workshop on Multiple Facets of Afro-Hair (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.-8.30 p.m.) sounds  interesting as well.

In fact, Afrodyssée is considered one of the five most influential events that showcase African creativity in Europe.

And let’s not forget about food! African gastronomy will be represented at several stands. Just have a look at the menu online. Believe me or not, it will be worth it. I can’t wait to get my hands on that “Tapas plate from Chef Safiou”.

I participated in 2015 and as much as I wanted to take part last year, I was heavily pregnant (in my 38th week) and had to pass. So this year, I can’t wait to attend.
