Arenal Volcano National Park is another attraction that you have to see when you visit Costa Rica. You can choose different paths to hike through the park but with Chloe-Sofia on our back, we chose the shortest one which took us to the Ceiba tree.
The Ceiba tree is a tropical tree that leaves long-lasting impression on everyone who sees it. It is majestic, beautiful and grand. The ancient Mayas considered it sacred and believed that it connected our world to the spiritual one. As you look up trying to see its umbrella-shaped crown, you end up feeling that it leads to secret, long-forgotten world. It is magical and one wants to climb up to discover what is hidden in its crown. It belongs to the same “family” (in botanical terms) as Baobab tree and can reach up to 60m of height.
Unlike Poás Volcano that we could see very clearly*, Arenal was always covered by clouds. As it is the most-active volcano in Costa Rica you can’t go all the way up. I admit, I would love to catch a glimpse of lava but maybe next time.
(*P.S. One week after our visit, Poás Volcano erupted and the National Park had to be closed. We were truly lucky that we could see the crater so well because now it is covered by clouds and smoke.)
I decided to publish this article today because yesterday was Earth Day. This trip to Costa Rica together with being a mother made me think a lot of nature and what legacy we will leave to our children. Costa Rica is such a pure and incredible country when it comes to flora and fauna. It is very easy to ponder whether you are living a meaning and full life.
