How To Build A Capsule Closet? The Importance of Wardrobe Inventory

In this video, I will show you how to make a wardrobe inventory and why it is important when you are building your capsule wardrobe.

What is a wardrobe inventory? In essence, it means that you write down everything that is in your closet. Why? Because before you start building your capsule wardrobe it is important to know what is already in your closet.

And what is a capsule wardrobe? A handful of pieces that you can wear anytime, that suit you and that reflects who you are. Clothes that don’t fit, or that you save for a special occasion should not be included. That is why it is important to make a wardrobe inventory. It is the first step to building a capsule wardrobe that will fit your lifestyle.

I personally think that you should focus on the clothes that you wear outside (over the weekend) and to work. I don’t include swimsuits, loungewear, sleepwear, sportswear, activewear, underwear, socks, and stockings.

But if you wear activewear outside of your house instead of regular pants, you should include it. I noticed that young people wear sweatpants to school and when they go out. When I was growing up, I would wear jeans or corduroys. Sweatpants were used only when you were doing sports.

You can download the wardrobe inventory file below and use it as a guide when you’re going through your closet. When you open the file, you will notice that I listed hats, scarves, handbags, backpacks, and jewelry under “optional.” Because it really depends on you if you want to include them in the capsule wardrobe. I have included hats, scarves, jewelry and handbags in my spring and summer capsule wardrobe. But I will not include them in my autumn and winter one. Why? Because my aim is to have a maximum of 35 pieces in my fall capsule wardrobe. And if I include scarves, it will already take 5 items, not to mention that I have 3 felt winter hats.

In my fall capsule wardrobe I’d rather focus on clothes, jackets and shoes because I know that since it is cold in Switzerland, I will need a lot of sweaters, several jackets and different boots.

As you can see, the most important thing about creating a capsule wardrobe is you. What type of lifestyle do you have? Are a stay-at-home mom , a working mom or business woman? What is your personal style? And your budget? All these questions are valid and important to make the capsule closet that you’re creating work for you.
